This year on April 18, 2014 I went to my counselor because I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get financial aid, and she said to me, “Faith, you can file for your Associates degree, and your macro certificate because there is nothing here for you so now you can transfer to SVSU, and go into the Social Work program. I am so happy because now I have an Associate Degree this took me about 12 years to achieve. The only options we had were to go my husband’s parents at the time or a hotel room, also had 2 girls when I started college, and then in 2003 had a third daughter, and I never gave up on wanting to go to college. After about 5 years of not being in college I decided it was time to fight to get my financial aid back to go college. I will not say this was easy to do because there were times I was on the couch crying about getting it back, but I kept fighting semester by semester to receive aid, and so I kept this cycle up for about 2 years, and finally they just awarded me the aid, and I continued to work hard. I also had two panic attacks in college, but kept pressing on. I am so proud that I didn’t give up, and now I will go to University to get my bachelor’s degree in Social Work, and then to get my Master’s degree in Social Work, too. To all the incoming college students don’t procrastinate, have some fun college experiences, no matter what circumstances come into your life while in college don’t give up continue to go through it, and it will be well worth it in the end to know that you have accomplished what you set out to do.
